The Web Design Development Bootcamp is a hands-on, Level 3 course designed to equip learners with the skills and confidence needed to plan, build, and maintain modern, responsive websites. Learners completing this Bootcamp will gain a strong foundation in modern web design and development, supported by a portfolio of real-world projects. They’ll be well-positioned to apply for junior roles such as Web Developer, Front-End Developer, or WordPress Designer, or to start freelancing.

- Overview

The course covers:
- An introduction to the principles of good web design, focusing on usability, accessibility, and user-centred design.
- Explore how user needs, device responsiveness, and visual hierarchy impact layout and functionality.
- Develop key design skills through wireframing and mock-up creation, using tools like Figma or hand-drawn techniques.
- Ensuring design website layouts reflect client goals, ensuring content and structure are optimised for user experience.
- WordPress – a widely-used content management system.
- Foundational web coding with HTML and CSS.
- JavaScript basics – providing the tools to build interactivity into their sites – such as form validation, image sliders, and dynamic menus.
- Soft skills support is embedded throughout, covering communication, teamwork, and project management – essential for freelancing, employment, or progression into further study.
- You will build a personal portfolio website to showcase their work to employers or clients.
This Bootcamp prepares learners for junior web developer roles, freelance work, or progression into higher-level digital qualifications or apprenticeships.
- For those who are unemployed – you will receive mentoring to support you seek employment opportunities whilst on the Skills Bootcamp
- For those who are self-employed – you will be supported in creating a business plan to increase and grow you customer base and offering
Our Skills Bootcamp is aimed at those who are:
- unemployed – looking to gain employment in the IT and digital sector; and gain skills in web design, or;
- Self-employed – currently providing digital services; looking to increase customer base and developing a business plan,
- Those employed looking to upskills and take on new duties and/or roles with your current employer

- Entry Requirements

Applicants for this course need to be either:
- Unemployed – committed to actively seeking employment opportunities independently during the course and provide evidence of a job interview and job offer within your subject area.
- Self-employed – If you are self-employed you are committed to building your business and provide evidence of a business plan that reflects the knowledge and skills, you have acquired and evidence of engagement with new clients.
- Employed – using the skills learnt in the Bootcamp to take on a new role or duties in your current role. Your employer will be asked to pay a contribution dependent on the size of the organisation. If you are part time employed funding will depend on your circumstances.
To apply you will need to meet the following criteria:
- You are 19 years or over.
- You have the right to work in the UK.
- You have lived in the UK or EU/EAA for the last 3 years or have a residency status that makes you exempt from this rule.
- English skills including written/spoken required with Level 1 being the minimum.
- You have not completed another Skills Bootcamp in this current financial year.
- You are committed to participating in delivery sessions for 12 weeks.
- This course is open to aged 19+ residents of Devon only who have a right to work in the UK.
All applicants will be assessed at interview.

This Skills Bootcamp is delivered at Institute of Technology, Digital & Data Centre, Hele Road, Exeter, EX4 4JS
- Additional Costs

During this course, we’ll be utilising WordPress.org to create websites. We’ll provide free hosting for your website, but you’ll need to purchase your own domain name (starting at prices as low as 79p per year). After 11 weeks, we’ll assist you in transferring your website to a new host, allowing you to further develop it or use it for your own business.
